Educational unrest and institutional rescue efforts in Venezuela and Mexico

In Venezuela, the Association of Professors of the National Experimental University of the Western Plains ‘Ezequiel Zamora’ (UNELLEZ), led by Junior Abreu, has launched the ‘Juntos por el Rescate de la UNELLEZ’ initiative. This program establishes working groups involving faculty, administrative staff, workers, alumni, and retirees to evaluate the institution's academic, administrative, and infrastructural conditions. The goal is to develop proposals for institutional recovery, with plans to eventually include political, business, and agricultural sectors in the discussions.

In Mexico, student teachers in Chihuahua have occupied the ‘Héroes de la Revolución’ building to protest the lack of permanent teaching positions. The occupation, which has disrupted government offices including the Secretariat of Education and Sport, involves demonstrators staying overnight to demand solutions. Secretary of Education Francisco Hugo Gutiérrez Dávila has entered negotiations, proposing temporary positions initially, while noting that permanent assignments must follow established rules and seniority requirements.
