Mexican student protests over education and safety

Overview

Students from various rural normal schools across Mexico have launched widespread protests targeting educational infrastructure, living conditions, and safety concerns.

In Hidalgo, demonstrators from the Escuela Normal Rural Luis Villarreal ‘El Mexe’ disrupted a regional event led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to demand the reopening of their campus and investigations into a student homicide. In Morelos, students occupied the offices of the Institute of Basic Education (IEBEM) to protest for infrastructure projects and the reinstatement of a dismissed worker. Additionally, marches were held in Cuautla to demand justice for the femicide of a Spanish exchange student.

Other regional activities include students in Zacatecas blocking the Secretariat of Education to demand the restoration of professional practice stipends, while protests in Cuautla addressed the expansion of enrollment without adequate facilities. In Sonora, authorities noted that the reconstruction of the Fausto Topete primary school is expected to be completed in October.
