Effects of daily coffee consumption and sugar on alertness
Daily coffee consumption affects the body through various mechanisms, primarily by stimulating the central nervous system. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, a substance responsible for the sensation of fatigue, which helps increase alertness and concentration. While coffee provides antioxidant compounds, its effects vary significantly based on individual sensitivity, stress levels, and sleep patterns.
Contrary to popular belief, adding sugar to coffee does not enhance the stimulating effects of caffeine. Research indicates that caffeine and sugar act on entirely different biological pathways; caffeine targets neurological receptors, while sugar provides glucose for energy. Studies, including one published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that alertness levels are similar between black coffee and sweetened coffee.
Furthermore, consuming sugar with coffee may lead to a reactive hypoglycemia. A spike in blood glucose is often followed by a rapid drop 30 to 60 minutes later, which can cause a sudden onset of fatigue rather than sustained energy.
