Ege University addresses stray animal removal and poisoning allegations
Ege University has responded to controversies regarding the management of stray animals on its campus. Following reports of increased attacks by stray dogs on students and staff, university administration coordinated with local authorities, including the Bornova District Governor's Office and Bornova Municipality, to relocate approximately 83 dogs to municipal shelters.
The university administration also issued a formal denial regarding social media allegations claiming that cats on campus were being poisoned with toxic food. The rectorate characterized these claims as "misleading disinformation" and announced that legal action is being taken against those spreading the allegations.
To address the situation, the university is maintaining discussions with the Ege University Animal Rights Society to find a collaborative solution for stray animals. Information regarding the health and rehabilitation of the relocated dogs has been shared with students, and some of the animals have reportedly been adopted through student volunteer efforts.
