Ege University stray animal removal controversy

Overview

A nighttime police operation at Ege University in Izmir resulted in the removal of approximately 160 to 200 stray dogs from the campus. The intervention, which involved riot police and the use of tear gas against protesters, led to clashes between security forces and students/animal rights activists. While Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that 83 dogs were moved to municipal shelters and are in good health, activists have organized marches to demand transparency regarding the animals' welfare.

In response to the tension, the university administration coordinated with the Bornova District Governor’s Office and municipality to manage the relocation. The university also issued a formal denial regarding social media allegations that campus cats were being poisoned, labeling such claims as ‘misleading disinformation’ and initiating legal action against those spreading them. The administration has stated it is maintaining discussions with the Ege University Animal Rights Society to seek collaborative solutions, noting that some relocated animals have been adopted by student volunteers.
