Ege University dogs removed during nighttime police operation

Approximately 160 to 200 stray dogs, which had been cared for by students and the Ege University Animal Rights Society, were removed from the Ege University campus in Izmir during a nighttime operation involving police and riot police.

The removal led to significant tension and clashes between security forces and students/animal rights activists. Reports indicate that police used tear gas and physical force against protesters, and electricity was cut in the area during the operation. Activists have organized marches to protest the action, demanding information on the dogs' whereabouts and welfare.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that the decision was not made by the municipality but was carried out following instructions from the university administration and the Bornova District Governor's office. He noted that 83 dogs were taken to the municipality's shelter and claimed they are in good health. The Izmir Bar Association has called for clarification regarding the legal basis of the intervention and the status of the animals.
