Egg freezing trends rise in Italy amid discussions on accessibility

The practice of social freezing, or the elective freezing of eggs to delay motherhood, is seeing increased interest in Italy. While medical egg freezing for patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy is covered by the national health system, elective social freezing remains a significant financial burden for many women, costing between 3,000 and 6,000 euros per procedure plus annual storage fees.

Regional efforts are emerging to address these costs. In Tuscany, a proposal is under review to provide free egg freezing for personal choice, aiming to make the procedure accessible regardless of social standing. Puglia has also occasionally offered contributions toward these costs.

The global conversation on fertility has been recently highlighted by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who shared her decision to freeze her eggs. In Italy, public figures and startups like Meggy Care are working to increase awareness and provide information to help women navigate their reproductive options and the challenges of declining birth rates.
