Egg prices rise across East Asia amid supply constraints
Egg prices are rising across parts of East Asia due to supply constraints caused by extreme heat and seasonal demand. In China, wholesale prices reached a three-year high during the third week of August 2026. High temperatures have caused heat stress in poultry, leading to a drop in egg production rates to approximately 90%. Additionally, low inventory levels and increased demand from the baking industry for the Mid-Autumn Festival have further tightened the market.
In Taiwan, Costco has begun testing a change in packaging at select stores, reducing egg counts from 30-packs to 20-packs to ensure more members can access the product amidst tight supply. While local industry experts suggest a full-scale shortage is unlikely and expect recovery by September, current production has been impacted by heat and previous avian flu outbreaks that reduced flock sizes.
