Asian egg supply shortages and price increases

Overview

Egg prices have experienced upward pressure across South and East Asia due to supply constraints linked to extreme weather and disease.

In India and Nepal, rising costs were driven by heat-induced chicken mortality, increased feed costs, and bird flu outbreaks. In Nepal, bird flu reduced daily production from approximately 4.5 million to 2.8 million eggs. To combat these issues, the Odisha state government in India announced a ₹10 crore subsidy to stabilize prices and boost poultry production.

By late August, price volatility continued in Nepal. The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association (NLPFA) implemented a fifth price increase within a single month. The support selling price for the largest-sized eggs rose by Rs 15 per crate, reaching Rs 590 per crate of 30 eggs. NLPFA President Binod Pokharel attributed the surge to a significant production shortage caused by previous bird flu outbreaks that necessitated the culling of large numbers of chickens.

In East Asia, similar trends emerged. In China, wholesale prices reached a three-year high as extreme heat caused poultry heat stress, reducing production rates to roughly 90%. Increased demand from the baking industry for the Mid-Autumn Festival further tightened the market. In Taiwan, retailers like Costco began testing smaller packaging sizes to manage limited supply. While experts in Taiwan anticipate a recovery by September, current production remains impacted by heat and previous avian flu outbreaks.
