Egg prices rise in Tegucigalpa markets due to production costs

Egg prices have risen in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with a carton of 30 units reaching between 120 and 130 lempiras in various markets and farmers' fairs. This increase of approximately 14 lempiras per carton is placing additional pressure on household budgets, as eggs are a primary protein source for many families.

Producers attribute the price hike to several factors, including high production costs, rising fuel prices, and a shortage of laying hens. Specifically, there is currently a lack of available chicks to replace older hens, and imported birds from the United States are subject to fluctuations in the US dollar exchange rate.

In addition to eggs, some dairy products have also seen price increases. Certain fresh cheeses have risen from 56 to 58 lempiras per pound, a trend producers link to drought conditions and a lack of pasture for dairy cattle. Producers have warned that egg prices may continue to climb in the coming months, particularly as demand typically increases during the holiday season.
