Egg prices surge across Ecuador and Mexico amid rising costs

Egg prices are rising significantly across Latin America, placing increased pressure on household budgets in Ecuador and Mexico.

In Ecuador, the price for a 30-egg carton rose from an average of $3.50 to between $4.10 and $4.50 during August 2026. Producers in regions like Tungurahua attribute the spike to rising costs for corn, which has exceeded $20 per quintal, and a doubling of the cost of imported amino acids due to shipping instabilities. Additionally, increased trucking freight costs and a reduction in poultry farm capacity following low price cycles in late 2025 have tightened local supply.

In Mexico, retail egg prices in Coahuila increased by 27 percent, reaching up to 28 pesos per kilogram in late August. This follows a broader national trend where egg prices rose nearly 8 percent in a single month. Significant price hikes were also noted in other Mexican states, such as Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Michoacán. These increases coincide with the back-to-school season, impacting families who rely on eggs as a staple for student meals.
