Egnatia Odos management faces scrutiny over safety and delays

Concerns have been raised regarding the management of the Egnatia Odos motorway following its concession to New Egnatia Odos SA, a joint venture between GEK TERNA (75%) and Egis Projects (25%). Since the management transition on December 30, 2025, significant traffic restrictions have been implemented.

In tunnels exceeding 500 meters, one of the two traffic lanes has been closed due to ongoing certification works required for the transport of dangerous goods. This has resulted in continuous single-lane traffic for stretches as long as 29 kilometers, particularly in the Pindus region. Critics argue these restrictions create dangerous conditions, as there are insufficient areas for vehicles to pull over in the event of a breakdown.

Emergency services have also reported difficulties. EKAB workers have noted delays in ambulance transit between hospitals in Epirus, Western Macedonia, and Central Macedonia. Additionally, reports indicate that EMAK units faced delays reaching an emergency site near Metsovo due to the single-lane restrictions. While the concession agreement allows for a 60-month period for pending works, there are concerns that the actual duration of these disruptions could extend significantly longer.
