Saint Francis of Assisi 800th anniversary religious commemorations sacred music Franciscanism

Various cultural, religious, and academic events are being held across Europe to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.

In Poland, an exhibition titled ‘I, Brother Francis. 800 Years of a Great Adventure’ will be held at the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi in Krakow from October 24 to 27. The exhibition features artworks by Brazilian artist Brother Sidival Fili and focuses on the saint's personal journey and spiritual transformation.

Italy is hosting numerous tributes, including a musical journey through medieval sacred traditions at the Trento Musicantica festival and a concert in Somma Lombardo featuring both classical and contemporary sacred music. In Rieti, the ‘Giullari in festa’ closing spectacle will combine music, poetry, and theatrical tradition. Additionally, a musical dialogue between the traditions of Saint Francis and the Persian poet Rumi is scheduled in Rome.

Academic discussions are also taking place, such as a presentation in Syracuse of Sylvain Piron’s biography, ‘Francis and His Brothers,’ which examines the saint's universal relevance in the modern world. In Ceuta, Spain, the commemorations included a historical pilgrimage to San Antonio involving various local brotherhoods and the presence of relics from Tetouan.
