Egypt activates TIR system to boost transit trade and regional logistics hub

Egypt's Customs Authority and the General Chamber of Commerce signed a "Guarantor" agreement to implement the International Road Transport (TIR) system. The move is intended to streamline customs procedures by allowing sealed cargo to be inspected only at departure and arrival points, cutting clearance times and logistics costs.

Officials present at the signing included Transport Minister Kamel Al‑Wazir, Finance Minister Ahmed Koka, Investment and International Trade Minister Mohamed Farid, Chamber President Ahmed Al‑Wakil, and IRU Secretary‑General Umberto Di Preto. They highlighted that the TIR system will enhance Egypt's role as a regional logistics hub linking Europe, the Gulf and Africa, and will facilitate transit shipments from neighboring Sudan and Libya through Egyptian ports and road networks.

The activation aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to modernise customs, improve supply‑chain efficiency, and attract further investment in ports, roads and logistics zones.
