China and Egypt launch Eagles of Civilization 2026 joint air drills
China and Egypt have launched the second edition of their joint air force exercise, titled ‘Eagles of Civilization 2026’. The drills are taking place at various Egyptian air bases and are scheduled to run from mid-August through early September.
A significant highlight of this iteration is the deployment of China’s Shenyang J-16 multirole strike fighters, which arrived in Egypt after a 6,000-kilometer intercontinental flight. This marks the first time the J-16 model has been deployed to the African continent. The Chinese formation was supported by YY-20A aerial refueling tankers and included KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft, Y-20A transport planes, and Z-20 helicopters.
The exercise focuses on enhancing operational coordination and exchanging expertise in several key areas, including air combat tactics, air superiority operations, combat search and rescue, and joint force employment. The drills represent a deepening of military cooperation between Cairo and Beijing, showcasing China’s ability to project air power over long distances and Egypt’s ongoing efforts to diversify its military hardware and strategic partnerships.
