Egypt audits food subsidies, seizes illegal bread and adulterated goods in Qalyubia and Beni Suef
In Qalyubia Governorate, authorities from the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade inspected roughly 1,900 municipal bakeries and confiscated 387 smart subsidy cards used for fraudulent bread distribution. The operation resulted in 140 regulatory violations, including selling subsidised bread above official prices, offering non‑subsidised “free‑range” bread outside the system, and producing undersized or sub‑standard loaves.
In Beni Suef Governorate, supply officials uncovered 24 tonnes of falsified food products, including 11.5 tonnes of soy beans and 12.5 tonnes of black pepper made from unverified raw materials. Inspectors also seized 370 kg of spoiled meat and poultry, 500 kg of unfit chips, and issued further fines for unlicensed operations, failure to display prices, and non‑compliance with hygiene standards.
