Egypt intensifies health reforms and food-safety enforcement
Overview
In July and August 2026, Egyptian authorities significantly escalated food-safety enforcement and market inspections across multiple governorates. A major focus was placed on Qalyubia ahead of the Mawlid al-Nabi holiday, where officials shuttered an unlicensed confectionery plant in Benha, seizing 18,400 pieces of candy and 650 kg of production supplies.
During the first week of August, enforcement intensified in Qalyubia and Dakahlia. In Qalyubia, officials seized approximately 4 tons of cooking oil of unknown origin from an unlicensed facility. In Dakahlia, inspectors issued 880 violations between August 2 and August 8, with 545 violations recorded at bakeries regarding weights and specifications.
By mid-August, enforcement actions expanded. In Giza, officials seized 25 tons of cooking oil and 36,000 bottles of energy drinks of unknown origin. In Assiut, authorities issued 307 violations against bakeries and markets, seizing meat slaughtered outside official slaughterhouses and subsidized flour. In Gharbia, raids in El Mahalla El Kubra and Tanta led to the seizure of 6 tons of spoiled poultry and 580 kg of unfit food products.
In mid-to-late August, raids expanded into Minya and Monufia, where inspectors seized 864 kg of unfit meat and fish in Minya, and 60 tons of raw cooking oil in Monufia. In Assiut, a campaign in the Sahel Salim area uncovered a packaging factory containing over 9 tons of undocumented sugar and rice. In Beheira, authorities seized expired snacks, sugar of unknown origin, and undocumented cigarettes. In Dakahlia, the Directorate of Supply recorded 1,018 violations between August 15 and 21, including 787 bakery infractions and the seizure of significant quantities of diesel and gasoline. Officials have referred many seizures to the Public Prosecution for legal action and destruction.
