Egypt health reforms and food‑safety raids continue
Overview
In July, Egypt’s authorities intensified a nationwide food‑safety campaign. After seizing unfit meat in Beni Suef and 56,000 L of subsidised diesel in Al‑Bahira, inspectors moved to Dakahlia and Gharbia on 10 July, shutting two unlicensed dairy plants, confiscating 10 t of salt and 0.5 t of mozzarella, and recording 191 bakery and 26 market violations. A confectionery factory in Gharbia was raided, with 800 kg of insect‑contaminated candy seized and legal action taken.
Parallel health‑sector oversight continued. Deputy Health Minister Dr Amr Qandeel visited Dakahlia hospitals on 2 July, while Dr Abla Alfi inspected primary‑care sites in Beheira and Matrouh. On 8 July the General Authority for Accreditation and Health Control accredited 31 public and private facilities under ISQua‑recognised GAHAR standards.
On 12 July the Menofia governor inaugurated a new multi‑specialty medical complex in Ashmun, transferred to the Health Insurance Authority to ease overcrowding. The same day, Ahmed Sabki, chair of the General Authority for Health Care, presented a comprehensive insurance operational plan featuring weekly performance monitoring, unified reporting, faster complaint handling and expanded specialist services, such as child heart surgery in Luxor and advanced cardiac care in Aswan.
Later that week, Health Minister Dr Khaled Abdel Ghaffar addressed parliament, reviewing the rollout of the National Health Strategy 2024‑2030 and the National Population Strategy. He highlighted the comprehensive insurance scheme providing free care for indigent patients, 15 presidential initiatives on early disease detection, increased health‑budget allocations, new hospitals, medical caravans delivering free services across governorates, radiation‑oncology centres in seven regions, diabetic‑foot treatment units and a drive to boost medical tourism. The minister underscored the ongoing partnership between the executive and legislative branches in supporting these reforms.
Overall, the government maintains a dual focus on tightening food‑safety enforcement and accelerating health‑system modernization.
