Egypt coastal protection projects reviewed by Irrigation Minister

Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, has reviewed the progress of several coastal protection projects designed to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and rising sea levels.

Key ongoing projects include a 2-kilometer protection stretch in Alexandria from Bir Masoud to Al-Mahrousa, and a 600-meter project in the Loraan area to protect the Corniche and restore sandy beaches. Other active works include the construction of wave barriers in Ras Bar, Damietta, and coastal protection in Matrouh and Kafr El-Sheikh.

The Ministry is also preparing new sites for protection in Kafr El-Sheikh and Damietta. Additionally, studies are underway for the integrated management of a 1,200-kilometer shoreline along the North Coast. Sweilem emphasized the use of eco-friendly natural materials and the importance of treating the coastal zone as a single interconnected system to ensure environmental and economic sustainability.
