Egypt confirms wheat strategic reserves are secure for several months
The Egyptian Cabinet Media Center has denied reports suggesting that the country's strategic wheat reserves are being negatively impacted by declining imports. According to the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, the current wheat stock is secure and sufficient to meet citizen needs for several months.
The ministry attributed the strengthened reserves to increased local production, supported by higher government procurement prices designed to incentivize farmers. During the 2026 supply season, the state received approximately 5 million tons of local wheat, aided by expanded cultivation areas. This rise in domestic output has reduced the necessity for imports, helping to shield the local market from global supply chain disruptions and price volatility.
To maintain these levels, the government is expanding the use of digital and technological systems for silo management. These systems allow for real-time monitoring of wheat movement, balances, and withdrawal rates, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing waste. The ministry continues to monitor global market developments and supply chain trends to ensure the steady availability of essential commodities.
