Egypt declares Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam illegal
Egyptian Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam has declared the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam illegal, stating it violates international law and cannot be recognized by Egypt. Speaking during a trip to Tanzania to inaugurate the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam, Sewilam contrasted the Tanzanian project—executed by an Egyptian consortium—with the Ethiopian dam, which he described as a bad example of unilateral action by an upstream country.
Sewilam emphasized that while Egypt does not oppose the right of Nile Basin countries to pursue development, it will not tolerate unilateral measures that harm the interests of downstream nations. He asserted that any future actions regarding the Nile must be conducted through a negotiating framework and a binding agreement to ensure the rights of all riparian states are protected.
Egypt maintains that the management of the dam without coordination with Egypt and Sudan violates international legal principles. The minister noted that the protection of water rights remains a top priority for Egyptian water policy and diplomatic efforts.
