Egypt drug testing campaign identifies 22 school bus drivers using narcotics

The Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Substance Abuse has reported the results of drug testing campaigns conducted on school bus drivers during the first six weeks of the 2026/2027 academic year. Out of 3,660 drivers tested across various governorates, 22 tested positive for controlled substances, including 21 cases of hashish and one case of tramadol.

Following the positive results, the drivers have been referred to the Public Prosecution on charges of driving under the influence. The Fund is also coordinating with the Ministry of Education to ensure that any drivers confirmed to be working at schools are dismissed from their positions.

These testing campaigns, conducted in cooperation with the General Administration for Drug Control, the General Administration of Traffic, and the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, will continue throughout the school year. The Fund has encouraged parents and families to report any suspicious behavior in drivers via a dedicated hotline, noting that such reports will trigger immediate, confidential, and surprise inspections.
