Egypt school bus driver drug testing campaigns

Overview

During the first month of the 2026/2027 academic year, the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Substance Abuse conducted drug testing on 2,594 school bus drivers across several governorates. These initial campaigns, coordinated with multiple ministries and the General Administration for Drug Control, resulted in 15 drivers testing positive for hashish and tramadol. Those individuals were referred to the Public Prosecution, and authorities worked with the Ministry of Education to facilitate their dismissal.

By the sixth week of the academic year, the scope of the testing expanded to 3,660 drivers. This updated campaign identified 22 drivers who tested positive for controlled substances, specifically 21 cases of hashish and one case of tramadol. As with the previous results, the drivers were referred to the Public Prosecution for driving under the influence. Authorities have stated that these detection campaigns will continue throughout the school year and have encouraged parents to report suspicious behavior via a dedicated hotline to trigger surprise inspections.
