Egypt drug tests 2,594 school bus drivers

The Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Substance Abuse has conducted drug testing on 2,594 school bus drivers across several governorates during the first month of the 2026/2027 academic year. The campaigns, carried out in coordination with the General Administration for Drug Control, the Traffic Department, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education, resulted in 15 drivers testing positive for hashish and tramadol.

The 15 drivers have been referred to the Public Prosecution on charges of driving under the influence. Additionally, the Fund is coordinating with the Ministry of Education to ensure that any drivers found to be working in schools are dismissed from their positions.

Authorities stated that these early detection campaigns will continue throughout the school year and will expand to various governorates, including testing drivers directly at school premises. The Fund has also urged parents and families to report any suspicious behavior by drivers via a dedicated hotline, noting signs such as red eyes, dark circles, aggressive behavior, or erratic driving.
