Egypt egg prices surge 100% since start of September

Table egg prices in Egypt have surged by approximately 100% since the beginning of September. Producer prices for a tray of white eggs rose from roughly 60 EGP in early September to between 110 and 120 EGP. Consumers are currently paying approximately 130 EGP for white eggs and 140 EGP for red eggs, depending on the region and market demand.

Ahmed Nabil, head of the Table Egg Division at the General Union of Poultry Producers, described the spike as a “market correction” rather than an exceptional price hike. He noted that for nearly six months, producers were selling eggs below production costs—with costs reaching approximately 115 EGP per tray while selling prices hovered around 60 EGP—leading to significant losses and reduced supply.

The price shift is driven by several factors, including a 30% to 40% increase in the cost of feed and raw materials, alongside rising transportation and insurance costs. Additionally, the start of the school year has boosted consumer demand by an estimated 30% to 40%, coinciding with a relative decline in supply as producers struggle to maintain output following previous losses.
