Poultry and egg market trends in Turkey and Egypt
Overview
Poultry and egg markets in Turkey and Egypt have experienced recent price fluctuations and shifts in production dynamics.
In Turkey, egg prices rose by 37.8% during August, with the unit price increasing from 4.87 lira to 6.71 lira. While producer prices also climbed by 39.9%, industry representatives noted that the retail spike was influenced by seasonal demand for the upcoming school season and rising costs for packaging, fuel, and transportation, rather than monthly feed price increases.
In Egypt, the poultry sector has been identified by Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk as a pillar of national food security. Local production has reached 1.6 billion birds, representing a growth of over 14%, while table egg production has exceeded 16 billion eggs. The ministry is pursuing a strategy of sustainable self-sufficiency and export expansion, particularly to African markets, currently exporting to approximately 35 countries. To facilitate international trade, the ministry has worked with the World Organisation for Animal Health to certify numerous facilities as free from avian influenza.
Domestic poultry prices in Egypt continue to fluctuate. While some reports indicated a slight decrease in consumer prices for white chicken, other data shows farm-gate prices reaching 68 EGP per kilo, with market prices ranging between 78 and 85 EGP. The sector involves investments exceeding 200 billion EGP and employs approximately 3.5 million citizens.
