Egypt electricity sector analysis reveals significant energy losses

An analysis of Egypt's electricity sector, based on the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company's annual report through June 30, 2025, details the movement of energy from generation to transmission.

Total electricity generated reached approximately 239.888 terawatt-hours (TWh), with 232.904 TWh sent from production plants. The difference of 6.984 TWh (2.91%) represents the self-consumption required for plant operations rather than energy loss.

A discrepancy exists between the energy sent by production plants and the 231.036 TWh purchased by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. This 1.868 TWh difference, representing 0.80% of sent energy, is valued at an estimated 4.670 billion Egyptian pounds. The report emphasizes the need for 'energy reconciliation' to clarify measurement points between production and transmission.

Furthermore, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company reported a loss of 8.767 TWh, or 3.79% of the energy it purchased, which carries a theoretical value of approximately 21.918 billion Egyptian pounds. These losses include unavoidable technical losses caused by conductor resistance, power transformers, and transmission distances.
