Egypt electricity sector reports improved service and grid stability
Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has released data indicating improvements in power grid performance and service quality for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Ministry refuted social media reports claiming instability, noting that the national grid successfully managed increased consumption and record loads during the summer.
Key performance indicators show that total electricity loss decreased from 19.66% in 2023/2024 to 17.67% in 2025/2026. This improvement is attributed to intensified efforts to combat electricity theft, which resulted in 4.44 million reports and the collection of 18.67 billion EGP over the last two fiscal years. Additionally, the number of subscribers reached 45.4 million, with approximately 22.7 million using prepaid meters.
Service quality metrics have also improved, with the average outage duration per subscriber dropping to 103 minutes in 2025/2026 compared to 147 minutes in 2021/2022. The average number of interruptions per subscriber also fell from 1.7 to 1.3.
Separately, Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat met with Nexus Analytica to discuss the regulatory frameworks for the gradual liberalization of the electricity market. The discussions focused on implementing governance, transparency, and digital technologies to manage energy data, monitor renewable energy performance, and transition toward a more competitive market model.
