Egypt endures extreme heatwave with temperatures soaring to 46°C

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) warned that a severe heatwave is sweeping the country on 21 July 2026, with maximum temperatures reaching 45‑46 °C in Upper Egypt and perceived temperatures up to 44 °C due to high humidity. Most cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan, recorded extreme daytime highs and night‑time warmth, while coastal areas saw humid conditions and sea breezes.

An urgent public warning urged citizens to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and wear light, cotton clothing. The EMA also noted fog formation on early‑morning roads near water bodies and intermittent wind activity that may provide brief relief. The heatwave is expected to ease beginning Sunday evening in Greater Cairo and along the northern coast, with temperatures gradually moderating.

The agency highlighted the health risks of heat stress, especially for the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses, and recommended monitoring official forecasts for updates.
