Heatwave and wildfires surge across North Africa, Middle Ea
Entities: Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology · Egypt · Morocco · Direction Générale de la Météorologie (Morocco) · Israel Meteorological Service
Overview
The regional heat dome that has dominated North Africa and the Middle East remains on‑track to persist into early August. In Algeria, orange‑level alerts continue with daytime highs of 44‑45 °C and isolated 49 °C readings; nighttime lows stay above 28 °C and rolling power cuts strain the grid.
Palestinian authorities warned on 30 July that a dry heat wave would push temperatures 6‑7 °C above seasonal norms through 1 August, prompting health advisories on sun exposure, vehicle overheating and heightened fire danger.
Israel’s meteorological service projects temperatures up to 47 °C around the Sea of Galilee and northern valleys, with strong north‑westerly winds amplifying wildfire risk and high coastal humidity producing 60‑120 cm sea waves.
Morocco remains under orange alerts as forecasts call for 45‑47 °C in the Vallée du Gold, Oujda and Saïdia, with 42‑45 °C across much of the country. Thunderstorms are expected Thursday‑Friday, bringing 15‑20 mm rain, hail and gusty winds in the High Atlas and eastern plains.
Tunisia’s wildfire toll has risen sharply, now estimated at 12,100 ha of burned forest and farmland, the majority in agricultural zones. A multi‑ministerial meeting has pledged stronger coordination, additional resources and modern monitoring to curb further loss.
Egypt continues to face highs of 38‑44 °C in Greater Cairo and southern governorates, with humidity adding 2‑4 °C to perceived temperatures and coastal winds generating 2‑3 m sea waves. The heat dome is expected to linger, sustaining fire, power‑supply and health challenges across the region.
