Egypt expands renewable capacity with $420 million wind farm deal and 500 MW solar grid connection

Egypt signed development, operation and power‑purchase agreements for the 580 MW Gabal El‑Zeit wind farm in the Red Sea. The $420 million contract, signed by the New and Renewable Energy Authority, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and Alcazar Energy, gives Alcazar responsibility for investing, operating and managing the project, financing it through external sources and guaranteeing at least 580 MW of capacity while the transmission company purchases the electricity. The agreement supports Egypt’s target to raise the share of renewable electricity to 45 % by 2028.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat announced that the second phase of the 500 MW Obelisk solar power plant in Nagaa Hamadi will be connected to the national grid within weeks. The move follows the successful grid connection of the first 500 MW phase and its 200 MWh battery storage. In talks with Norway’s Scatec, Egypt discussed additional renewable projects totalling about 3.1 GW, a 900 MW wind farm slated for 2027, a 1.7 GW solar project in Minya and plans for a 4 GWh battery‑manufacturing facility.
