Egypt deploys satellite imagery and AI to monitor waterways
Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is expanding the use of satellite imagery, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence to monitor its water systems. Minister Hani Sewilam recently reviewed a monitoring model developed using Google Earth Engine, which allows authorities to detect changes around canals and water bodies, including the identification of newly constructed structures or illegal encroachments along waterway banks.
The initiative aims to create geospatial databases to document violations and support field teams in responding more efficiently to changes in the water sector. By integrating satellite observations with field measurements and existing ministry databases, the government seeks to improve decision-making and water management efficiency.
This technological shift is part of the ministry’s ‘Water System 2.0’ programme, which focuses on digital transformation, smart water management, and data-driven planning to support sustainable development goals.
