Morocco braces for orange‑alert heat wave with temperatures up to 45 °C

The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology issued an orange‑level alert for a severe heat wave expected from Sunday 28 June to Wednesday 1 July 2026. Forecasts call for maximum temperatures ranging between 38 °C and 45 °C across a wide swath of the kingdom. Provinces such as Marrakech, Béni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Rehamna, Oued Ed‑Dahab, Boujdour, Assa‑Zag, Es‑Semara, Tata, Taroudant, Tinghir, Zagora, Settat, and others are expected to see temperatures of 38‑42 °C on the first day, rising to 40‑43 °C in central areas like Sidi Bennour, Khénifra, Fès, and Meknès, and reaching 42‑45 °C in the most exposed inland zones.

In addition to extreme heat, the meteorological service warned of possible thunderstorms, strong gusts, and occasional hail in some regions. Authorities advised the public to avoid midday sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take special care of vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. The alert also mentioned the formation of early‑morning water fog on certain roads, prompting drivers to exercise caution.

The heat wave coincides with the start of the summer season in the northern hemisphere and is expected to increase discomfort and health risks, particularly for outdoor workers and residents in densely populated cities like Marrakech and Casablanca.
