Egypt hailed as global model for hepatitis C elimination

Egypt's Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khalid Abdel Ghaffar, said the country's hepatitis C eradication effort is a worldwide model for sustainable health transformation. The national "100 million health" campaign screened more than 60 million citizens and provided free treatment to over 4 million people, cutting the virus prevalence to 0.28 %. The achievement follows Egypt’s receipt of WHO’s Gold Level certification three years ago and rests on scientific planning, strong governance, integrated data systems, local drug manufacturing and expanded digital health services.

The programme also includes a nationwide early‑detection and treatment drive for liver cancer, which has led to a marked decline in incidence and mortality. Egypt intends to share its experience through training programs and capacity‑building partnerships across Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
