Egypt healthcare spending reaches 2 trillion pounds over 10 years

Egypt's Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, reported that the state has spent approximately 2 trillion Egyptian pounds on the healthcare sector over the past decade. Government spending on health has risen significantly from 42 billion Egyptian pounds in 2014 to a projected 511 billion Egyptian pounds for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 fiscal years.

To improve infrastructure, the ministry is implementing 1,309 health projects with investments exceeding 403 billion Egyptian pounds. Approximately 1,000 of these projects have been completed, while 323 projects are currently under execution. The state's five-year plan aims to add nearly 20,000 new hospital beds to increase medical capacity.

Regarding public health initiatives, the minister noted that the campaign to eliminate surgical waiting lists has facilitated over 3 million surgeries since 2018, costing more than 38.6 billion Egyptian pounds. These interventions included open-heart surgeries, valve replacements, and tumor treatments. Additionally, presidential health initiatives have provided over 303 million health services to approximately 95 million citizens, covering various life stages from marriage preparation to elderly care.
