Egypt's Housing and Electricity Ministries Sign MoU to Boost Smart‑City Energy Governance

Egypt's Minister of Housing, Randa Al‑Manshawi, and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Assem, signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Telecom Services Company and EV‑Industris to establish a governance framework for electricity‑consumption optimisation in new‑city developments. The agreement targets the deployment of smart street‑lighting that dims LED fixtures according to traffic flow, aiming to cut energy use by more than 30 % and support the country's Vision 2030 goals for smart, sustainable urban communities.

The MoU also outlines the creation of an integrated monitoring platform to analyse consumption data, improve operational efficiency, and guide decision‑making. In parallel, the Housing Ministry reported that, since 2014, over 1.15 million housing units have been built or are under construction across new cities and existing urban areas, advancing Egypt’s large‑scale residential development plan.

Both ministries highlighted that the collaboration will enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and accelerate the integration of renewable sources, which are expected to provide 45 % of the national electricity mix by 2028.
