Egypt improves electricity meter installation speeds and theft prevention

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has reported significant improvements in utility service delivery and theft prevention. The average time required to install code electricity meters has decreased by 60%, dropping from 50 days to 20 days.

Over the past two fiscal years, distribution companies installed approximately 3.1 million code meters to combat electricity theft. During this period, authorities issued roughly 4.44 million theft reports, collecting approximately 18.67 billion Egyptian pounds. These measures have contributed to a reduction in total electricity loss rates, which fell from 19.66% in the 2023/2024 fiscal year to 17.67% in 2025/2026.

Service quality indicators have also improved. The average outage duration per subscriber decreased to 103 minutes in the 2025/2026 fiscal year, compared to 147 minutes in 2021/2022. By the end of the 2025/2026 fiscal year, the total number of electricity subscribers reached approximately 45.4 million, split nearly equally between prepaid and standard meters.
