Egypt invests in Alexandria Port upgrades and continental VICMED transport project

Egypt is advancing major maritime and continental transport initiatives to boost trade and connectivity. The Alexandria Port Authority plans to invest approximately 9 billion Egyptian pounds to upgrade several berths, enhance operational capacity, and improve logistics infrastructure. This development includes completing projects at El Max port, upgrading cargo storage areas, and constructing five breakwaters totaling roughly 6,945 meters. Additionally, the port aims to establish four new shipping lines connecting to European and African ports within the next two years, including expanded 'Ro-Ro' services for direct truck and trailer transport.

On a broader scale, Egypt is promoting the VICMED project, an ambitious $12 billion multimodal transport system designed to link Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea. The project involves 10 Nile Basin countries: Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The initiative aims to integrate river, rail, and road networks to enhance regional trade, tourism, and economic integration in alignment with the African Union's Agenda 2063. Technical and environmental studies for the project are ongoing, with a focus on creating sustainable transport corridors.
