Egypt regional infrastructure and Nile Basin development
Overview
Egypt is pursuing large-scale maritime, transport, and water infrastructure developments, with a significant focus on regional connectivity within the Nile Basin.
Initial efforts involve upgrading the Alexandria Port through a 9 billion Egyptian pound investment to enhance berth capacity, logistics, and shipping lines to Europe and Africa. This is part of a broader push for the VICMED project, a $12 billion multimodal transport system intended to link Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea across ten Nile Basin countries.
Building on these regional goals, Egypt has moved toward mobilizing financing for 36 projects under the Nile Basin Initiative, covering hydropower, water supply, and electricity interconnections. To support these regional priorities, Egypt launched a $100 million financing mechanism. Additionally, the government is exploring international cooperation to encourage private-sector participation in renewable energy and green economy infrastructure through mechanisms such as the Infrastructure Financing Guarantee Facility.
