Egypt mediates potential Iran-U.S. negotiations

Egypt is attempting to revive diplomatic and nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States to reduce tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding efforts to bring Tehran and Washington back to the negotiating table. These talks occur alongside Iranian-Omani discussions concerning the management of the Strait.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has declared a victory, stating that the international community has recognized Iran's position. Conversely, U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged an escalation of economic pressure and isolation to force Iran to abandon its nuclear program and ensure the full reopening of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials have characterized this strategy as a coordinated economic campaign intended to achieve objectives without major military operations.
