Egypt Ministry of Electricity warns against electricity theft fine brokers

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has issued a warning to citizens against fraudulent brokers claiming they can reduce electricity theft fines or settle debts for a fee. The Ministry emphasized that all legal procedures, including the settlement of violations and regularization of status, must be conducted exclusively through official competent authorities.

According to an official source, electricity theft fines are determined by specific legal rules and cannot be illegally altered by individuals. Disputes regarding fines must be submitted as formal grievances to distribution companies, where they are reviewed by a committee rather than a single person.

Distribution companies are currently intensifying efforts to collect unpaid electricity theft fines, which reached 12 billion Egyptian pounds by the end of the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The Ministry has directed companies to increase judicial enforcement and police presence to combat theft and contract violations.

Fines are calculated based on the maximum capacity of all appliances in a premises, assuming 24-hour operation for up to 12 months at the highest non-subsidized rate. Fines are doubled for personal use and can reach five times the calculated value if the electricity is stolen for others. These fines cannot be paid in installments, and meters will only be reinstalled after full payment of all penalties and compensations.
