Egypt Ministry of Supply addresses rising bread production costs

Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, held meetings with the General Division of Bakeries and the Grain Industry Chamber to address the production and distribution of flour and bread. The discussions focused on the rising costs of production for tourist and Fino bread, driven by increased flour prices. Abdullah Ghurab, head of the Bakeries Division, noted that the price of a ton of flour has risen from approximately 17,000 EGP to 21,000 EGP, putting significant pressure on bakery operations.

To mitigate these challenges and ensure food security, the Ministry is taking proactive steps to secure wheat supplies by diversifying import sources and managing local wheat stocks. The government is also emphasizing strict adherence to Ministerial Decree No. 5 of 2026, which regulates the weights and prices of tourist and Fino bread.

Authorities have pledged to intensify inspection campaigns at markets, mills, and bakeries to prevent unjustified price hikes or weight manipulations. The Ministry continues to monitor market fluctuations and global supply chain disruptions to maintain the stability of the subsidized bread system and ensure the availability of essential goods for citizens.
