Egypt monitors Nile flow amid concerns over illegal operation of Ethiopia's dam

Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Souleym, chaired the standing committee on Nile water intake to review recent developments. The committee highlighted the ongoing unilateral operation of Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam, which it described as illegal and in breach of international law. Because of the lack of a binding legal framework and regular data exchange, downstream operators must continuously revise their water‑management scenarios.

The committee reported that Nile inflow in June was above average, while July’s flow fell below the mean, making accurate flood forecasts difficult until early August when more hydrological data become available. It also noted that seasonal climate patterns such as El Niño and La Niña could influence rainfall across the basin, requiring ongoing monitoring and updates to seasonal predictions.
