Egypt boosts petroleum refining to reduce fuel imports

Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is focusing on increasing domestic refining capacity to reduce the national import bill. During recent general assembly meetings, Minister Karim Badawi highlighted the vital role of refineries in securing local markets and emphasized the economic benefits of investing in efficiency projects.

ANRPC (Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company) reported a record production of high-octane gasoline, reaching approximately 2 million tons annually for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. This output covers more than 30% of Egypt's domestic demand. Additionally, ANRPC saw energy efficiency savings rise from $1 million to $5 million in the most recent fiscal year.

Alexandria Petroleum Company also reported increased activity, with crude oil refining volumes rising by 9%, bringing its plant operating rate from 70% to 83%. These developments are part of a broader strategic push, including $4.5 billion in planned refining investments, to maximize the value of crude oil and enhance energy security.
