Egypt prepares for end of IMF program and new national development vision

Egypt is transitioning its economic strategy as its current reform program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is scheduled to conclude in mid-December. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the government is finalizing a national development vision through 2045, which aims to operate independently of international institutions. While the IMF has noted positive results from the current program, there are currently no indications that Egypt has requested a new one.

Regarding food security, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade reported stable strategic reserves, noting that sugar stocks cover over 10 months and poultry stocks exceed 5 months. The ministry emphasized that the price of subsidized bread remains fixed at 20 piasters, benefiting approximately 65 million people.

To protect consumers, the ministry warned that any deficiency in the weight of free-market bread is considered commercial fraud, punishable by up to five years in prison. Authorities are working with the General Division of Bakeries and the Grain Industry Chamber to monitor flour availability and ensure market stability.
