Egypt Receives $1.8 Billion IMF Funding for Reform Program
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed its latest assessments of Egypt’s loan programme and approved a disbursement of about $1.8 billion. The tranche consists of roughly $1.5 billion under the $8 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and $274 million from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), which supports climate‑related projects. IMF Executive Board member Mohamed Maait said the funds will be transferred to the Central Bank of Egypt within five business days, bolstering foreign‑exchange reserves, supporting exchange‑rate stability and helping meet upcoming external‑debt obligations.
The new financing adds to the $73 billion of IMF loans already agreed with Egypt, which was first extended in December 2022 and later expanded to $80 billion in March 2024 amid high inflation and foreign‑currency shortages. The IMF noted that Egypt’s economy has shown resilience to regional conflict spill‑overs, citing flexible exchange‑rate policies and constrained public spending. It projects GDP growth of about 4.6 % for the 2025/26 fiscal year, with a 5 % quarterly rate in Q3.
