Egypt Revises Food Subsidy Card Eligibility and Opens Appeals Process

Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade continues a review of the food subsidy card database, a program that began in 2019 to ensure that subsidies reach truly eligible households. The ministry has kept the appeals window open for citizens whose cards were suspended, allowing them to update personal and income information via the Egypt Digital platform, attach supporting documents, and submit a formal grievance.

Each case is examined individually. If an appeal is approved, the card is reactivated and subsidy allocations resume from the following month. The ministry outlined the criteria that trigger suspension, including high income, ownership of multiple or high‑value cars, residence in upscale compounds, children attending private or international schools, ownership of commercial enterprises or large agricultural lands (over 10 feddans), recent death of the holder, prolonged travel abroad, or a six‑month period of inactivity.

Spokesperson Ahmed Kamal and Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation Mohamed Sheta emphasized that the process aims to promote social justice and improve the efficiency of the subsidy system.
