Egypt Secures $391 M Deal to Build 500‑kV Line for Gulf of Suez Wind Power

Egypt has signed a $391 million (EGP 20 bn) investment agreement with an Egyptian‑Emirati consortium to construct a 500‑kilovolt, double‑circuit overhead transmission line. The 61.6‑kilometre line will run between the Orascom and El Hawamdeya substations, linking wind farms in the Gulf of Suez to the national grid.

The contract was awarded to Intelligent Globe Construction (IGC) Egypt and IGC UAE, which will handle engineering, equipment supply, installation, testing and commissioning. The project supports Egypt’s goal of having renewable sources generate 45 % of its electricity by 2028 and to accommodate an expected 22 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. European Union funding of up to €690 million for grid modernization will also help integrate the added wind power.

By enhancing transmission capacity, the line aims to improve grid stability, reduce bottlenecks and attract further clean‑energy investment to the Gulf of Suez corridor.
