Egypt to increase teacher salaries by up to 6,000 EGP

The Egyptian Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education have announced a plan to increase teacher salaries by between 5,000 and 6,000 EGP over a two-year period. This initiative, stemming from recommendations of the Egypt Forum 2026, will be implemented in two stages, with the first phase beginning in July 2027.

The salary increases will apply to teachers covered by Law No. 155 in both general and Al-Azhar education. An estimated 1 to 1.2 million teachers are expected to benefit. The Ministry of Finance aims to raise the minimum income for teachers to 15,000 EGP by 2029 through these increases and additional income streams.

Other educational reforms announced include the development of a professional licensing system for teachers, a national program to upgrade 600 technical schools in partnership with the private sector, and an expansion of Japanese-Egyptian schools from 103 to 500 within three years. Additionally, the government plans to implement evening shifts in primary schools by 2027, preparatory schools by 2028, and secondary schools by 2029.
