Egypt expands railway workshop network to upgrade maintenance

Egypt's Minister of Transport, Kamal El-Wazir, has announced a comprehensive plan to modernize the national railway system. This includes the completion of 33 railway workshops and the establishment of 11 new ones, with eight already finished. The initiative aims to enhance maintenance and technical security for mobile units, alongside upgrading infrastructure, communication, and control systems.

During inspections of major maintenance facilities and the ERMAS company, the Minister reviewed the rehabilitation of locomotives, including 41 EMD models and the ongoing development of 100 Henschel locomotives in cooperation with the American firm PRL. The ministry is also managing maintenance for Talgo, VIP, and various air-conditioned train models.

In preparation for the 2026/2027 academic year, El-Wazir inspected Ramses Station in Cairo to ensure operational readiness for increased passenger volumes. He emphasized the importance of cleanliness, passenger services for the elderly and disabled, and strict adherence to safety protocols and schedules. Additionally, the ministry continues to operate high-speed Talgo services on the Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Aswan lines.
