Egypt transportation infrastructure expansion

Overview

Egypt is implementing large-scale infrastructure expansions in the aviation and rail sectors to meet 2030 national growth and tourism targets. In the aviation sector, EgyptAir and Air Cairo are planning significant fleet expansions to accommodate a goal of 30 million annual visitors by 2030.

In the transport sector, the government is focusing on a massive rail modernization program, including the construction of 2,250 kilometers of high-speed electrified railway. Progress has moved toward the final preparations of the first 660 km high-speed line connecting Sokhna to Alamein and Matrouh. Minister of Transport Kamal al-Wazir has described this network as a ‘new Suez Canal on rails’ due to its strategic connectivity between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

Work on the rail network is being conducted by a consortium of Siemens, Orascom, and the Arab Contractors. Current activities include track laying, electrical system installation, and the development of a large-scale maintenance workshop. The ministry intends to begin passenger-free trial operations on specific sectors of the first line in the near future.
